Review of Starship Troopers (1997) by Moni K — 10 Feb 2011
Warped, gory and often exhilarating, Starship Troopers is quite a bizarre piece of Hollywood entertainment. Paul Verhoeven has always been a hit-or-miss type of director; for every Robocop there's a Showgirls to account for.
As ragingly stupid as it is unexpectedly sharp and political, this somewhat butchered adaptation of Robert Heinlein's classic science fiction novel somehow manages to work despite itself. Nominated for the Visual Effects Oscar in 1998, it certainly has aged well as an enjoyable CG extravaganza, even if the filmmakers consistently ask you to root for the Fascists.
