Review of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) by Dave W — 23 Jul 2009

By far and away the worst of the Trek films even surpassing the mediocraty of The Motion Picture as pure nonsensical messyness with a dash of how ridicuclous is this crap? thrown in for extra bad measure.

Who gave William SHATner license to direct anywayz? What was Paramount thinking? They must have known beforehand what he was going to do to the franchise. I mean..c'mon, really. The story goes like this.

..A rogue Vulcan man who has feelings intends on seizing Kirks New Enterprise (the Eneterprise A. Remember the last one got blowed up) to use it as a vessell to find GOD at the great Barrier (Yes thee GOD capitol letters, the creator of all things small and large.

Riiiight). So this is the premise of the film as nobody has ever breached the great barrier at the farthest reaches of space and this Vulcan extremist believes that Mr. God is just past this energy force that nobody has ever seen the other side of.

Turns out that God looks a hella lot like the Wizard from the Wizard of OZ and Captain Kirk can scale mountains well past his prime. The new Enterprise is totally brand spanking new but is laden with trouble and malfunctions which is a joke that carries on for wayyyy too long.

Lt. Uhura performs a dance as a distraction in a wayyyy too skimpy outfit for her age and I almost gagged, so you have been wraned. I could go on and on but why would I continue to relive this disaster any longer than I already have.

The Blue Ray Version doesn't look bad but not nearly as pristine as the first 2 films and on Par with the 4th. Black levels aren't consistent and nothing really pops in high def. Better to just get the Trilogy and save yourself the aches and pains of this film.

Unless your a fan of Trek you have been warned.
