Review of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) by Robert M — 02 Oct 2018

I hate to be one of those "You just don't get it" people, but I have to.

Is this one of the greatest movies of all time? No. absolutely not. Is it a good Star Trek film? Yes and No. That depends on how dedicated you are as a fan and how well you are able to grasp some of the film's higher concepts.

This is a movie that gets better every time you watch it. I didn't even really get it myself until maybe my fifth viewing. I'm not sure if that was from over analyzing it, or if that is just because of my increase in maturity over time. Either way, I had always considered this film to be one of the worst Trek films until that one day when the light bulb went on over my head. There is actually a lot of incredible nuance and literary expression in this film as well as heaping doses of meta humor if you are familiar with the cast and their off-screen relationships. While perhaps not billed as such by the studio, this a very funny comedy and a very personal story being told by the film's writers.
