Review of Stalag 17 (1953) by Nick O — 27 May 2010
Proves Billy Wilder's whimsical sense never ceased, even in a movie supposedly about American POW's in a German camp of war. Stalag 17 tosses in miscellanea about WWII, sure, but his fascination with the cigar-smoking, misled man played by Oscar-winner William Holden is gripping.
Angry and dismayed Holden paces with an induced fallen-angel sort of quiet mischief. It makes you quite literally scratch your head the way M*A*S*H or Hogan's Heroes did. But then wait, it'll scratch it for you.
Wouldn't want you getting any ideas.
