Review of Stake Land (2010) by Scott W — 04 Feb 2012
Unforgivingly bleak road trip through an America ravaged by vampirism and right wing, fundamentalist religious cults. Nick Damici is brilliant as 'Mister', the tough as nails vampire slayer who takes a teenager under his wing after saving him from the gruesome massacre of his family.
This intense, atmospheric, at time horrifying and beautifully shot movie is complemented by a sensitive score and good performances. The vampire creatures are basically dumb zombiefied creatures, their origins are barely discussed, and the cult leader is an off the peg stereotype, but these are minor complaints in what is a satisfyingly original film.
