Review of Stake Land (2010) by Jaime M — 07 Jun 2012
An almost predictable indie with the usual "only" black guy of the team been killed in less than ten minutes of been introduced to him.
It is based on mysteries characters of the modern van Helsing and his young assistant. who travel north to reach new Eden (Canada) which the vampires haven't yet reached (somehow) They travel to surviving communities, gain and loose companions and fight the cult of the brotherhood.
Is it a vampire film? really? looks like zombies and vampires decided to have an offspring....making super zombies. you don't actually realize there vampires until someone say there vampires.... However the true antagonists are not vampires but the cultists, who sadly lack scenes.
There's also an accompanied voice over, which is cheesy and meaningless not to mention annoying, it actually makes the film laughable. Finally the many cliched scenes does plague the mind to forget what happens in the film. there's only few scenes I can refer that give any atmospheric or emotional impact.
As a fan and believer of indie, this is a disgrace. The filmmakers are no different to the major film studios, removing all originality and creativity of the horror genre for the sake of it been accepted by a wider audience. This doesn't deserve 75% fresh rating.
