Review of St. Elmo's Fire (1985) by Shawn K — 09 Mar 2009
People are right when they say that the movie starts off horribly. The opening half an hour is honestly PAINFUL. It makes ALL of the characters out to be unlikable, boring, stick-up-the-ass yuppies. But luckily, once you battle through the character introductions, if you can even call them that, we get a much more interesting film! Once the strange personality traits and even more so personal problems of each character begin to pan out, you will finally find yourself giving a shit about the movie! This is the only movie I've ever seen where Rob Lowe is actually a fucking bad ass, and you LIKE him! Clearly I can relate at least a little bit where as he is the rocker and a partier, and likes to get a bit 'premiscuous'.
Fortunately, I'm not stuck with a baby like he is and also, I found the right girl for me, - he can't seem to. The scene where he jams out on the saxophone and then gets into a bar fight is probably the highlight of the whole movie.
Judd Nelson is a douchebag. Successfully. Emilio Estevaz is a fucking creep. Effectively. Demi Moore is the hottest i've ever seen her. Fun and young. Ally Sheedy is adorable and probably the one you feel for the most from the bunch.
This is certainly no Breakfast Club (my favorite 80's teen movie). If you're a fan of John Hughes films and the wannabe John Hughes films, do not expect a similar vibe from this movie. it's much, much more serious and sophisticated which it is clearly trying to be.
A good watch if you're in for some realistic drama amongst a group of friends.
