Review of Spartacus (1960) by Jason M — 01 Feb 2016
Another Kirk Douglas and Stanley Kubrick pairing, this telling of the 3rd Servile War of Ancient Rome led by Spartacus. This was an early historical project that elevated Kubrick to master film-maker status in Hollywood.
A little dated for today, but still highly moving and dramatic. Particularly notable is the homo-erotic bath scene with Tony Curtis, censored in its day. The final scene as Varinia passes Spartacus and shows him his son is particularly moving. This is nothing short of an epic.
