Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Steve G — 02 Oct 2008
This film without Meryl Streep's towering performance would be a fine film but missing that one ingredient that makes it a great film. The story is good and the casting is uniformly excellent, the direction fine. It is a good film for intelligent audiences.
Sophie is brought to life by Meryl Streep in what must be one of the great performances in the history of cinema. To call it a tour de force performance is understatement. Her performance ranks with the greatest of all time: Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara; Falconetti as Joan of Arc; Celia Howard in "Brief Encounter"; Olivier as King Lear; Kate Hepburn as Catherine of Aragon; Louise Brooks in "Pandora's Box".....
That alone makes "Sophie's Choice" a must-watch. It's enough.
