Well... Meryl Streep's acting was great in this. Truthfully, I kept hearing the reference to 'Sophie's Choice', so I felt the need to understand what that meant. The explanation didn't come until nearly the end.
It felt like 2 movies combined-- halfway something like Streetcar Named Desire and halfway something like Schindler's List. It was glued together in quite a strange fashion. Glad I can get the reference now, but not something I would want to watch again.
