Review of Son of Frankenstein (1939) by Tristan P — 16 Jul 2008
My favourite Frankenstein film! Gone is the show-offy theatricality of James Whale, replaced by the straight-forward craftsmanship of Rowland V. Lee. To me, this is the pinnacle of Hollywood gothic, surpassing even Ulmer's THE BLACK CAT in terms of baroque beauty.
It's also got what I consider Bela Lugosi's best acting, a performance that reveals the inaccuracy of the common held belief that Lugosi was not a good actor.
