Review of Sicario (2015) by Gerry R — 05 Feb 2017
Usually I'm bothered by present-day films in which the heroine can do no wrong. This movie however is a throwback to the misogynistic films of old, the backlash to which created the ridiculous politically correct superwomen of newer popular movies. Featuring nothing less than a slut-shaming scene in which the heroine needs to be saved by the hot macho heroes from being killed by her one-night-stand gone bad. And boy does she feel guilty after. But this scene is merely the lowest point of a film in which the female lead does virtually nothing but look confused while the men around her boss her around, keep secrets, run the show entirely. We are told at one point she is only around because she is the sole member of the secretive group who is actually a cop. What an honour.
Besides that, this is really nothing more than another cynical action movie whose entire premise seems to be that the war on drug cartels is a farce (duh), with a lot of shootin' and stuff blowin' up. It's riveting, and makes for a fun evening but, like our slut-shamed heroine, you'll regret it later.
