Review of Short Term 12 (2013) by Dov D — 15 Sep 2013
Destin Cretton's Short Term 12 is a once in a lifetime film. Never before has a film affected me so deeply. This is, without doubt, the most emotionally riveting story I have ever seen captured on camera.
Around halfway through, I honestly wasn't sure what I was going to think about this movie once the credits rolled. The emotion was more real than I've ever seen before, but the story felt disjointed and the direction somewhat sloppy.
.. But once the credits actually rolled, I was blown away. Never before have I cried as many times during a film as I did during Short Term 12. The seemingly disjointed first half of the movie ended up making perfect sense once the film had ended.
Every scene, every conversation was essential to the message and the story being told. The acting was, in my opinion, the only weakness of this film; but in many ways, the offbeat performances added emotion and honesty to the roles.
There is so much to be taken away from this movie that I don't know where to start. Bottom line, this is the best movie of the year (so far) and one of the best films I've ever seen. The importance of this movie cannot be overstated.
I'd recommend this to everyone.
