Review of Shame (1968) by John B — 10 Sep 2008
Bergman's one and only war film. A film that Bergman hated, but I can't imagine why. Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullmann play a couple whose troubles amplify when war breaks out in their country. Sydow is more the submissive character, while Ullmann is the dominant one, running between heartless and a crying wreck.
But, once Sydow is pushed to the edge, he takes control and does what he thinks is right and damn what anyone else thinks. This film is feels like a major influence on Michael Haneke's "Time Of The Wolf" and Alfonso Cuaron's adaptation of "Children Of Men.
" Bergman's best film. A must see.
