Review of Shame (1968) by Ben R — 22 Sep 2014
Not sure whether to give this 3.5 or 4 stars, but let's go with 4. I'd been warned beforehand that this was one of the darkest movies I'd ever see, and wow, it was. This was just so grim the whole way through.
In theory, I don't like movies that are just depressing all the time, to the point that it's just a slog. This was so well-executed, though, and the running time was short enough that it wasn't a slog.
There were the occasional happy moments; though the events occurring in the first half of the movie were still sad, the bond between Eva and Jan was strong, and it was beautiful seeing them come through and support each other.
That seemingly unconditional love just made the second half that much harder to watch. It reminded me of Blue Valentine, with a war serving as the background.
