Review of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) by Blake P — 17 Aug 2011
Wonderful thriller. Charlie (Wright) is really excited when her Uncle Charlie (Cotten) is coming to town. But when Uncle Charlie is acting suspicious (tearing up newspapers, not letting his picture get taken) Charlie is determined to find the truth.
Since Uncle Charlie ripped up a part of the newspaper, Charlie goes to the library to look at what wasn't there. She's shocked to see an article about the "Merry Widow" murderer, but is really freaked out when the latest victims initials is on the ring her uncle gave her.
Soon the suspicion grows, and Charlie is scared for her life. Hitchcock's career was just getting started in America, and every film he made starting in 1940 was a big hit, and EVERY actor wanted to work with him.
He got the best YET AGAIN-- great actor Joseph Cotten and award-winning actress Teresa Wright who both give excellent performances. Many many times, Hitch has called "Shadow of a Doubt" his favorite American thriller, and because I've seen many of his movies, I can say this is definitely one of his best.
Though it isn't in the ranks of others like "North by Northwest" or "Psycho", "Shadow of a Doubt" stays consistent and is exciting throughout. Recommended.
