Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Nader H — 02 Oct 2010
It is categorized as an epic. Well, I don't think there's been a better epic to come along since. We can Ben-Hur or Gladiator or any other big film, but Seven Samurai epitomizes the term "epic".
It's length, at a staggering three and a half hours, reminds us what is epic. In that time, we are taken on a compelling journey of honor and humanity. A village enlists the help of seven master-less samurai, or "Ronin", to help protect their poor community from corrupt Feudal lords.
Up until the final confrontation, we are given a real character study, not only of the Seven Samurai, but of the villagers, as well. We see human nature exposed, from fear and lust, to happiness and sadness.
It's an incredible film. One that will never be ousted. And that includes the pointless remake coming up.
