Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Luke H — 06 Dec 2012
This film is truly an epic masterpiece of japanese cinema. Even though the film is over 3 hours long, the story draws me in and find those 3 and a half hours enjoyable. The story about selfless ronin samurai protecting a village from bandits has inspired many films today, including the excellent anime series Samurai 7, The Magnificent Seven, and even Pixar's A Bug's Life.
Even though it's an action epic, it has time to take a humanist look at war. What impresses me the most about this film is the battle scenes. This film has no elaborate choreography, no special effects, very basic stunt work, but is one of the most intense battle scenes I've ever seen.
Purely because of good editing and filmmaking. Besides, who doesn't love Toshio Mifune in this film?
