Review of Seven Samurai (1954) by Irene M — 29 Aug 2017
A 7-star film. 'Seven Samurai' is a grand film, which, once the obstacles implied by language, culture, length and era are all broken, surprisingly shows how universal it can truly be, partly because of its simple plot.
It is not merely a film of battles composed of innovative and grave action sequences, nor a Samurai film which would be Western-like; it is a work on character, with great portrayals of Mifune's and Shimura's.
Also thoroughly captivating and impressive, Kurosawa's film is as deep as its score and as dexterous as its filmmaking. Awe-inspiring and having a multitude of dimensions, it is an astonishing cinematic work.
