Review of Serpico (1973) by Jose M — 15 Feb 2013
Serpico is one heck of a cop film that is raw and gritty. It is set in the sixties as an honest cop Serpico (Al Pacino) is accepted as police officer. He takes great pride in serving and protecting the public that is until he discovers corruption plaguing his job, facing internal and external conflict.
You will also seem prejudices in the force from treatments towards the minorities to homophobia. However, there is a bigger fish for Serpico to fry. Disliked and often scolded by his peers, Serpico never gives up although at times he is left disheartened, straining his relationship.
Such complex problems are dealt with a slow process. Serpico is based on a true story, so I have heard. The film is often sharp and honest with Pacino delivering a strong performances. Not only that, he goes the extra mile by dramatically changing his appearance from a regular policeman to an undercover agent with the counterculture movement.
You would not think of him as a cop with his long hair, big beard, and rather loose clothing. The film may have some downsides like fatigue and all. However, it is never boring enough to force one to sleep.
I would definitely recommend Serpico. It is a must watch drama and cop film.
