Review of Self/less (2015) by Duncan1964 — 19 Jul 2015
Self/Less is in no way a bad film, it's really just a disappointing one. The story of a man who buys a new body when his is on the way out makes for a good starting point and the first 30 minutes are intriguing and well made, but then the audience suddenly finds it is one step ahead of all the characters, and we remain that way throughout the film.
No matter what twists and turns the film throws at us, they are so well signposted that nothing comes as a surprise and in the end boredom starts to set in. The most disappointing aspect of the film, however, is its visual style.
Director Tarsem Singh has made some of the most beautiful looking films of the last few years (Immortals, Cell, The Fall) but Self/Less just looks, well, ordinary. And that's unforgivable.
