Review of Scarlet Street (1945) by Brian R — 20 Jun 2009
Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street is a sad masterpiece. Edward G Robinson plays a naive, tarnished man who meets a hoe by the name of Kitty played by Joan Bennett. The man likes Kitty but Kitty has better plans to use the Robinson character. She loves her Pimp boyfriend played brilliantly by Dan Duryea.
Fritz Lang aka the master of darkness knows how to shoot dark mean streets and conflicting violence--Lang's stories and visions is always facinating to admire. In Scarlet Street the screenplay beautifully written by Dudley Nichols gives a brutal slice of life. The characters are flawed, sinners, betrayers. The final scene left me in sadness.
