Review of Scarlet Street (1945) by Mikey M — 24 Sep 2013
Robinson plays away from home in more ways than one as the soft touch with a fantasy for a young mistress in this classic noir. The performances feel dated and on-the-nose, but the film is nicely plotted and it interestingly pushed the production code rules to breaking at the time.
Bennett and Duryea fill out the two villains of the piece - who just about deserve each other in the down-right horrible stakes, and Robinson plays the pathetic but lovable 'Chris Cross' ("the boys tease me about it, but I don't mind") that is being duped by the unscrupulous pair.
The film feels a little clunky transitionally at times, but you'll quickly find yourself rooting for Chris and a hope that he'll kill them both and get away with it....nuff said.
