Review of Scarface (1932) by Marin M — 03 Jul 2018
Brian DePalma, Oliver Stone and Al Pacino, these names are like the rockstars of Hollywood at that time. I caught this at the cinema last night and I must say, seeing it on the big screen was a dream come true.
That final scene is incredible but the sweeping camera work that while a DOP would orchestrate is clearly DePalma's influence. DePalma is one of my favourite filmmakers, even when his films don't click, they are still beautiful to watch.
Al Pacino is intense and his character absorbs at every beat, you want him to win and it breaks your heart knowing he is going to fail. How he did not win an award for this role is exactly why the Oscars sucks the big one, so over commercialised and way too safe.
The film is not as confronting as it once was but with DePalma maintaining the pace it will have you on edge from beginning to end. Great film and a film that was advanced for its era, it is definitely the key to push the boundaries at the time, people will appreciate a film that is not safe and hollow.
