Review of Saturday Night Fever (1977) by Mendez A — 14 Aug 2013
Historically remembered as being a piece of historical 70s fluff in between Travolta's iconic pose and the unstoppable Bee Gees soundtrack, I had placed it firmly in daggy nostalgia. Which it still very much is, but having been so many years since I actually sat down and watched it I was a little surprised at how ugly and weirdly demented it was.
None of the characters are actually that endearing and it serves as more of a slice of American low socio-economic night life and the creeps that existed within of the 1970s than it does a light and stylish piece of disco memorabilia.
It's the crowning achievement of Travolta's early career, which he may have only surpassed once or twice since. Historically it's soundtrack holds a unique place in rock & roll history too.
