Review of Saturday Night Fever (1977) by Another V — 16 Aug 2018
I've waited a few years to review this, because...I was upset after I saw it. But I have felt that the "Me Too" movement is worthy of making a review that acknowledges it, and this is the perfect movie for that acknowledgement of "Me Too.".
I must've seen the R rated version. Just read there is a more family friendly PG version.
I've seen many movies starring Travolta that I liked, and I expected to like this. The dancing was fun. You can tell the actors had fun with the dancing.
But I have a little problem. The date rape stuff at the tail end of this just really brought this movie down for me. I felt strongly that they are minimizing date rape and it was upsetting to see that. But I have to put it into context; that was about 40 years ago. I wondered, how many guys watched this movie and then decided to try those date rape moves on their next date?
"Me Too" is a movement of actresses and actors, but it's not just about them. Because it's not just actresses that go through unwanted sexual advances, attempted rape, inappropriate use of power by a superior to try to get sex, and all the typical sexual harassment issues. This stuff is as old as humanity itself, a scourge of civilization since the dawn of civilization, and we're still nowhere near rid of it, and perhaps never ever will be. Statistically, if you have a daughter, she is at high risk of going through something like this, because statistically, a high percentage of women experience these sorts of things.
The "Me Too" movement makes it a topic getting the attention it deserves. Because sweeping it under the rug has been the old standby remedy (and pretty much only solution) for generations. Unless you get one of your male family members to take revenge into their hands. In tribal times maybe that was the solution?
In my local paper I read that the Me Too movement has inspired more women to come forward and report rapes. However, the likelihood of getting your date rape brought to trial and successfully get "justice" is extremely small. Extremely. So, you can pretty much forget about justice for the most part. Instead, go for prevention.....go to a martial arts class and carry some mace if you are young, pretty and dating, I guess. What else is there? Let your Momma and/or Daddy choose and chaperone all your dates?
Ok,nuff said on that depressing subject.
