Review of Satantango (1994) by Derek W — 08 Oct 2007
If one was forced to choose THE MASTERPIECE of contemporary filmmaking, this would have to be it. "Astounding", "staggering" and "monumental" are words that barely convey the feeling of raw beauty emanating from this work of art.
It is at the same time a desolating reality and a hypnotic dream--not even Tarkovsky could have put the two together so magnificently. As noted by others, Tarkovsky's vision of "sculpting in time" is the only appropriate definition for 'Satantango'.
An incredible cinematic achievement!
