Review of San Andreas (2015) by Juan M — 17 Nov 2015
You would think Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson can make any movie entertaining to watch no matter how bad or cheesy or goofy it may seem.... here's the exception. I literately wanted to like this film and call it entertaining ( Lehigh if it was it would at least get my three star rating), but I was given a by the numbers cliche disaster film that really could have easily been done better If they even tried harder.
I'm self-conscious of what is expected and commonly found in a disaster film... terrible CGI, cheesy writing, bad story telling, "Fuck you science," and "mother nature is a bitch." But let me compare disaster films to Nickelback.
... it's a terrible genre movie but it's a popcorn movie nonetheless. Just pick and choose what you like about the genre and pray it can entertain you for two hours more or less, and forget the rest.
In this case for me, this film landed on the rest pile. I found The Rock's acting delivery very dull, the other actors are more or less on the same level excluding Paul Giuamati who was the better actor in the film, the CGI was more of an eyesore than 2012, the character developments was boring, shoe horned, and unimaginative, and although the while "fuck you science" is what makes a disaster film what it is.
.. there is only so much "fuck you death and fuck You coincidence" moments a guy can take. This movie did have some potential of making different choices to do some stuff outside the norm but they never took advantage or worse didn't even notice it.
The only thing they did make different was that the damsel in distress (the Rock's daughter in the film) had purpose and better training to survive and help her friends, but that can be argued as just being a role reversal in which after she was saved once that her love interest decided to be the coward and damsel in distress (but to be fair just more of a coward with some form of courage to at least protect her if you get what I mean).
Either way, it still follows a disaster movie norm. And speaking of which, if you seen any of Roland Emmerich film's (2012, Day After Tomorrow, even Independence Day, etc.) You practically already seen this film.
.. just add a 9.6 earthquake and tsunami (wait that's also 2012.... hmmmm....) and a dulled up Dwayne Johnson... you get this movie. But as I said, a disaster movie is a popcorn movie and in Layman's terms, it's a prefernce film.
This is a preference film... but I do define preference films in three different ways: I either recommend, don't recommend, or am indifferent about it. In this case, for me at least, this film is a preference film that I don't recommend.
However if you like this film, I wouldn't phase about it nor mind watching it if you were playing it, I just probably won't be paying attention to it.
