Review of San Andreas (2015) by Cork B — 27 Feb 2018
I recently watched the Rock's remake of Jumanji, which made me think of this stinker. It is REALLY hard to not like Dwayne Johnson movies - even the Tooth Fairy one had its moments - but this is just bad.
There are a bunch of cliched checkbox add on characters - the Ex, daughter in distress, etc. They gave them a few scenes of their own, but they are mostly there to gasp in awe at the Rock's muscles. There is kind of a sketchbook plot - they must have been cleaning out someone's office and found the old script from Airport 77 or Volcano (insert any bad disaster film from 20+ years ago) and said 'hey this will make money if we put the Rock in it!' Bleech.
On the EVER SO SLIGHT upside, if you like stuff to blow up real good, this movie is for you. There are some decent effects (even if WAY over the top), and I reserve the really bad 1/2 star ratings for TRULY bad movies like Emoji Movie or Angry Birds or movies where Bette Middler sings.
