Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Funso F — 17 Oct 2010
Yes, everyone talks about how amazing that the whole movie was shot in one take, and that is probably the main reason why I even bothered to watch this film. I have to admit I didn't have high expectations going into the film.
It was a little strange at the beginning, not really sure what was happening. Having actors fill the rooms from different time periods, including today, helped bring the Hermitage alive and for this, it was wonderful.
But the character of The Stranger, (Sergei Dreiden), was horrible. I should have put the film on mute, or perhaps turned off the subtitles. In Dreiden's defense, he played the character well, but the character was really annoying.
At various points I had to force myself to continue through the film so I could see more of the building. This film doesn't make me want to see the Hermitage and if I ever get there, I hope I will have forgotten the film by that point.
The character, The Stranger, removes two stars.
