Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Tor M — 04 Nov 2013
A lot of things can be said about this film. Firstly it's one of the most impressive and inventive films ever made. ONE uncut take with steady cam, with several hundred people om screen.
There are loads of history here, mostly Russian, told by a unseen character. It's like a dream, a floating story taking place at the Hermitage museum. It's not really entertaining, and it's probably it's only weak point. To quote another reviewer: "Russian Ark was like meeting an exotic, beautiful woman who has absolutely nothing important to say". It's a bit harsh, but also pretty describing since a setting, kind of sat someplace in the 1800's, usually equals boring stuff. See it's for it's uniqueness and it's beauty but not for entertainment reasons.
8.5 out of 10 paintings.
