Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Paul C — 16 Mar 2015
Absolutely amazing artistic and technical achievement. Truly done in one continuous 96 min. take (no hidden edits, no digital stitching), it is both a tour of the Winter Palace of the Hermitage Museum in St.
Petersburg, Russia as well as tour of 300 years of Russian history. In spite of the epic period it covers (and epic cast -? 800+ actors and 1000+ extras), it still manages to feel very personal. With the music and fluid movement of the camera, the whole film feels like you are dancing through the museum and dancing through time.
Fantastic film. Truly amazing on almost every level. Be sure to check out the making-off featurette "In One Breath", as well.
