Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Reece L — 14 Sep 2014
Sokurov understands the lyrical, dreamlike atmosphere that a single, uninterrupted shot would evoke and smartly plays into that with several breaks in the fourth wall and intelligent commentary on the nature of history and how, even if we are to live on forever through it, we must always look to the future for the sake of even grander accomplishments.
The fact that this film was made at all is an incredible feat on its own, but the intellectual and existential depth that Sokurov endues in the project is what truly makes the work a masterpiece and landmark in the history of cinema.
