Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Mohamed F — 16 Nov 2012
From the directors of Little Miss Sunshine, you'd expect it to be as exceptional as their previous work, a script with such a "high concept" that boarders on cliché, written by the lead actress, that happens to be her first script ever.
The movie really dances a lot on the fine line between a decent artwork and a pretentious cliché, with lots of hats tipping off to various films like 'Meet the Fockers', '500 Days of Summer' and the frame of 'Stranger than Fiction', and a climatic scene that strongly feels like it was made for a Miranda July film, the movie fails to preserve its own character and identity, and consequently, fails to be original in any way.
