It feels like I haven't seen an Australian film in a while (at a guess, 'Kenny' last year) and generally speaking 'Romulus, My Father' is the reason why. Occasionally there is a watchable Australian film like 'The Castle', 'Kenny', 'The Proposition' or 'Wolf Creek' will come out, but there mostly pretty crap.

'Romulus, My Father' isn't all bad. The acting, from everyone, is fantastic. The look of the film is really good. The problem is in the script, I know it's based on a true story, but it's just not particularly engaging. It may be my problem having seen 'Deliver Us from Evil' just before, not being able the see the plight of poor little Raimond, but I mostly spent the whole film waiting for something to happen.

This is the problem with most Australian films, there are some really good elements, but one essential element is missing. It's not always the same thing, but there always seems to be something. I don't know what could've been done to improve this story (especially considering the 'true story' aspect.) And one of the biggest problems was that I thought I wanted to see more of Eric Bana (who plays Romulus), it's supposed to be about him, but it feels like he's only in half the film.

Fantastic acting, but not much else. Give it a miss.
