Review of Romulus, My Father (2007) by Lee G — 15 Aug 2009
Slow, plodding, mundane, sad. Definitely not the feel-good summer movie. A lot of people will grow impatient with this autobiographical film. There's a lot of shots of people just staring, thinking, looking pained, and saying nothing.
That doesn't help tell a story. It just leaves the viewer confused. Everything was happening to the characters, which makes for a passive, unengaging film. The best performance, and the role the film centers on comes from the young Kodi Smit-McPhee, playing Raimond.
This makes sense because the film is based on Raimond Gaita's memoir. However, ultimately it's a case of too little too late.
