Review of Roger & Me (1989) by Tyler S — 24 Sep 2013
Director Roger Moore's take on his hometown of Flint, Michigan, which has gone a through a roller coaster of a time with its economy. Started off prosperous for the town with General Motors contributing to the economy, but it all went downhill when the major automaker pulled out.
Interviews include some very notable residents, including Roger Smith, the CEO of GM, and Bob Eubanks, the former host of "The Newlywed Game Show." It is a pretty thorough look at the town that has suffered extensive hardship and lost a fair portion of its population.
It is also pretty relevant today since all of Michigan has suffered from the auto industry meltdown from the 2008 recession, considering this movie was released in 1989. One grim note to this film: there is a scene where a local resident skins a rabbit.
It is not necessary to show that appalling scene and it does sadly impact the movie in negative way.
