Review of Rodan (1956) by Robert H — 20 Apr 2011
You knew it wouldn't be long after the success of Gojira that another kaiju film would be released. Much like with Godzilla Raids Again, there are two types of monsters, but this time, there are more than one of each. Ishiro Honda returns to the kind of film that has since made him famous and it shows. After the poor showing that was Godzilla Raids Again, Rodan is a breath of fresh air. Great FX including the destruction of cities using the power of wind rather than smashing and explosions was quite a sight. And while the Rodan monsters weren't exactly the most exciting, defending the Earth from flying monsters turned out to be a bit harder than might expect.
Again the morality plays on nuclear weapons and their fallout are present but the idea of over mining and using our natural resources is also present in this film.
A great addition to the kaiju films and a must watch for any Godzilla fan.
