Review of Robin and Marian (1976) by Martin C — 08 Oct 2016
This film is an excellent telling of the later Robin Hood story. Unlike others in the genera it is not flashy and full of youthful exuberance, it is quite and middle aged. Mind you when the swords do clash you can feel the pain, not of sword cuts and blows, but of old bones and muscles being called on to do a young mans work. Connery is, as usual, Connery, but in this film it fits, the performance is good. And as for Hepburn, her performance is wonderful. Together they epitomise what I think of as the ageing Robin and Marion. But by far the best in the film is Robert Shaw's as the Sheriff of Nottingham. So laid back and worldly wise.
When you watch this film don't expect youthful swashbuckling just enjoy middle aged resignation to a long life fairly well lived.
