Review of Rise: Blood Hunter (2007) by Keenan S — 16 Feb 2014
Rise: Blood Hunter is a tedious horror film. Despite trying to have some kind of a story, the story is so sloppily constructed that it has the structural integrity of a building made of brittle toothpicks.
The setup, while interesting, is very poorly laid out as the film goes on, rendering the characters as barely two-dimensional at best, while it's also confusing due to the very poor editing which jumps all over the place.
Lucy Liu tries her best with the very strained and thin material at hand, but she can't overcome the horrid script, while the other actors are content to be as wooden as possible. Also, for a film about vampires, revenge, blood-sucking, sexual content, and other aspects, the film is incredibly dull as it forces viewers to follow its vapid storyline and terrible dialogue.
The film probably would have worked better had it aimed for trashy thrills like gory violence and cheap sexual content in the tradition of films like the Underworld franchise. The film takes itself much too seriously and I was left constantly bored and annoyed by its insistence of being a crappy art house wannabe.
This is one of the dullest and most awful vampire films I have ever seen. I'm a person who enjoyed many trashy and stupid films, but this one was too awful even for my very low standards. You'd be better off watching Twilight, for fuck's sake.
