Review of Renaissance (2006) by Nic B — 21 Sep 2007
It was an OK movie.
The visual style is intense and cool, but because of the CG character stiltedness, it looks better still than in motion.
The story is not terribly original, and the pacing and flow is just weird. It feels like 80% of the movie happens in the last twenty minutes, and not just because of rising action.
I've never really cared about the low quality of English dubs in most imported animated films. I actually typically prefer that over having to read visually distracting subtitles, oftentimes. But here, the English voice acting is either extremely dull or much too hammy, and overall physically painful to listen to. The performances are not necessarily any worse than those of other import animations, but the ambitiousness of everything about this movie makes it particularly unforgivable here. The French voice track sounds much more authentic. But now the problem with that is that the lips are synced to English, so... one way or another, there's a bone to pick with the voicing.
It still was a cool movie, and fun to watch. But it also didn't have quite that slick, high-tech, cool-techno-jazz atmosphere that all of the promotional materials put upon it. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, because instead it's got something a little different, but it's what was expected.
All in all, maybe I would have been a little more positive about this movie if I'd have rented it instead of impulse-buying it at full price.
