Review of Renaissance (2006) by Graham M — 10 Apr 2015
What's infuriating about this movie is it feels only a few tweaks away from being excellent. The black-and-white animation gives it an amazing neo-noir look that also sometimes makes it hard to tell what's going on.
The animation is hyper-realistic for the most part which makes the occasional odd face movement stand out all the more. This may also be the first animated movie I've seen where I feel like a lot of the voice actors were miscast.
They're giving it their all but the voices just don't seem to match the character designs. Plotwise, it sets up an intriguing story that blends the sci-fi and film noir setting with some good twists and turns that runs for just a bit too long to stay interesting.
It's worth watching for its uniqueness and its often stunning visuals but it also feels like a missed opportunity in many ways.
