Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Dylan S — 02 Sep 2018
Was it good? No.
Was I entertained? Yes.
Was it dumb? Dumb as hell. J-Law was the most obvious spy ever, worse even than James Bond. But then again, it did catch me off guard with a few plot twists (spoiler alert: a spy movie with plot twists), so maybe I'M dumb as hell.
How were the Russian accents? Atrocious.
Were you titillated? Got a mild chub a few times, but that's gonna happen naturally over any random 2 hour and 20 minute interval. Not sure if that was the desired effect though...
Back when this first came out, J-Law pitched it as "the perfect movie for the #metoo era". This was laughable at the time, but after seeing it, she was partially right, at least thematically. The movie does largely center on the idea of women who choose to trade on their looks and sexuality for a living, and who end up being coerced into sex and are sometimes outright raped. But, you know, like I said, the movie was really dumb, so maybe the #metoo movement should hold out for a better film.
