Review of Red Desert (1964) by Paolo R — 01 Aug 2012
Back on the big screen after a clean up... but Antonioni's scene-setting and direction mean that the colours are still muted and the focus is never quite pulled to the right degree. But there is a point to this, as this is about alienation.
Monica Vitti holds our gaze, and looks deep into our eyes as she struggles with her inner demons. Odd to see Richard Harris dubbed into Italian, with the English subtitles being different to the words he is really speaking.
It may not have dated well, but it is still a powerful piece.
