Review of Red Desert (1964) by Tino P — 06 Feb 2018
Monica Vitti lives in a desolate, industrial landscape and suffers from severe alienation, unsure how to live and what to do. Richard Harris is a business associate of her husband's who recognizes her problems (he seems to suffer from similar alienation) and tries to help, but really just ends up having a pointless affair with her.
Antonioni's first foray into colour is a devastatingly beautiful film that captures both the wonder and the horror of our industrial landscapes. He suggests that we change our world faster than our psychology and morality can accommodate, which has only become more relevant during the intervening years.
