Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Robert W — 13 Jul 2009
It's not really fair to review a movie made in 1955 by 2009 standards, but I don't exactly have a choice, now do I?
I haven't seen a lot of the "classic" movies that everyone else has, and somehow I must have gotten the plot of this confused with Easy Rider.
I expected this to be about James Dean being a complete badass. A rebel without a cause, if you will. I didn't expect it to be about high school kids. James Dean looks at least 25, how in the world did people not laugh out loud at him being in high school?
The acting is not good (it really makes you realize why Marlon Brando was such a big deal) and the plot is ridiculous (most of it - from the knife fight to the game of chicken to falling in love to observatory shootout - takes place in one day as far as I can gather). To excuse it because it was made in 1955 is an insult to all the great films that were made in the 50's.
But everyone loves this movie. I don't get it.
