Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Mike H — 28 Aug 2010
For being stuck in the straitjacket of the Production Code, Rebel Without a Cause manages to be provocative on a few levels. But if we're going to be honest about entertainment and production value, 1950s sentiment stands the victor: most of the acting is phony, the score is generic, the photography is plain, and James Dean is too damn old to look anything but pathetic as a teenager throwing a tantrum.
Seeing Dennis Hopper at 19 is one of the highlights of the movie.
