Review of Shottas (2002) by Nicola S — 28 Jun 2009
This movie pretty much sucks. For two hours it uses drugs, violence, cars, and naked women to show why you should be a shotta (Jamaican gangster). Of course all of these scenes are so generic and poorly choreographed that is hard to be engulfed in them.
The only thing that seems genuine is the slang, which is so thick that subtitles are necessary. Then a funny thing happens.....the last scene shows the dangers of being a successful shotta after stealing and killing terribly stupid and clumsy.
Apparently not every single one of them can be killed off in such a sloppy manner. Actually, there might be one that doesn't want to let his guard down the entire time he is around his shotta enemies.
You can guess what happens to most of the main characters. The filmmaking is as lazy as the shottas, taking the generic gangster way out in almost every situation. Guns and violence don't make a realistic depiction of gangster life in Jamaica.
At least I hope it isn't as easy as the director makes it seem.
