Review of Rebel Without a Cause (1955) by Lord N — 13 Aug 2010
Well, I FINALLY got around to seeing this. I had heard so much about it and I had such high hopes for it. Well, my expectations were met. It is an excellent film. The cast does a fantastic job especially the three lead actors. As a teenager, I really liked some of the things that they had to say about my age group. "you're at the age where nothing fits". Yeah. I know what that's like. To me, the three main actors carried the whole movie. But the direction and screenplay were excellent as well. I would highly suggest this one to anyone who hasn't seen it. It is pretty fantastic.
TRIVIA TIME: 1. For the knife fight between Jim and Buzz, the actors used real switchblades and protected themselves by wearing chainmail under their vests.
2. All three lead actors, James Dean, Sal Mineo, and Natalie Wood, died young under tragic circumstances: Dean died in a car accident, Mineo was stabbed, and Wood drowned. (the curse of the Poltergeist has nothing on the curse of the Causeless Rebel).
3. James Dean is the only actor to be nominated for Best Actor posthumously twice. Once for this in 1955 and the other for Giant in 1956.
