Review of Pusher II (2004) by Aidan H — 13 Nov 2009
Fresh out of jail and with brains scrambled from drugs and baseball bats, Pusher's idiot drug dealer finds it impossible to go straight and ends up on the wrong side of everyone from his babymother to his evil crime boss father.
Redemption seems a long way off for the addled Tonny and the scene seems set for another gory comeuppance but, with deft scripting and realistic charactisations, nothing here is cut and dried. Another successful evocation of criminal life with director Winding Refn ramping up the tension, refusing to let us look away from the bleak inevitability of the lives of the lower orders.
Chockablock with drugs, hookers and thieves, this is an inordinately powerful movie that simultaneously moves and repels.
